(Ottawa Dog of the Week for March 31/08)

Molly the Miniature Poodle

“In March of 2005, my miniature poodle, Brandy, had to be put down. She was 11 years old. This was the second dog I’d had to say goodbye to and wasn’t at all sure if I could handle going through it again.

My husband was over in England visiting his family shortly after Brandy had died. His Mom, who is from Dublin, Ireland, wanted to buy me something special while Tony was there so he could bring it back with him. Tony and his Mom talked about Brandy and how much I was missing her and his Mom gave him the money so that I could buy a new puppy when he came home.

When my daughter and I picked Tony up at the airport, he had all sorts of goodies packed into a shopping bag from Dublin. On the bag was a picture of the statue of Molly Malone which is in the heart of Dublin. I was certainly familiar with her from the song and the stories about her.

I picked up my puppy on the long week-end in May of 2005 in Val des Bois, Quebec from a great couple who kept all the puppies in their home, making them very acclimatized to people and a social surrounding. As soon as I saw her, I knew that I’d call her Molly after the statue in Dublin and in honour of my mother-in-law.” – Molly’s mom, Linda
