I’ve never really thought about composting our dog’s poo – mostly I just want to throw it out because it’s smelly. Today I found a couple of websites outlining how to create a compost bin for your dog so you can reuse the soil.
The compost CANNOT be used on any food based plants due to the fact that it may contain some toxins that could be harmful if ingested. It also says not to use it on garden beds either.
How to create your own dog compost
- Take an old (or new) plastic garbage bin and drill lots of holes in the sides.
- Cut out the bottom of the bin and remove it
- Dig a hole in the ground that is big enough to put the entire garbage bin into.
- Put some gravel or rocks in the bottom of the hole for drainage then put the garbage bin into the whole. Make sure that there is a bit of the bin sticking out the top of the hole. Put a lid on top.
- When you scoop the poop, throw it in the hole and add some septic starter and water.
- The waste decomposes and enters the subsoil.
The compost can be used for shrubs and bushes, but not garden beds or food crops.

I picked up some bio-degradable bags at the Ottawa Eco-Fair this past summer, and was told they can be placed completely into my regular compost.
I am not a gardener, so our compost merely percolates and does it’s thing.
I used to be really good about flushing the droppings, but the bags were always still an issue. Hoping that the bio-degradable bags make a difference…
At Pethabitats.com, we manufacture the original, patented 100% flushable waste bag and a convenient pack that carries both used and unused bags. They are strong enough to not break down prematurely yet thin enough to easily flush in any toilet without clogging pipes. This also keeps waste out of the local landfills where it can pollute our water supply. Many cities are passing ordinances that prohibit the disposal of pet waste in garbage cans. Our method gets pet waste to the sewage treatment facilities where it can be properly treated. Go to our website, http://www.pethabitats.com for a free sample.

The best answer probably because dog poop can get treated just as your poop is. Throwing dog poop into the trash overcrowds our landfills and pollutes our water system.

I’ve worked with organics and food waste for 20 years. I suggest that a worm farm is a better alternative.
You’ll need a dedicated worm bin for dog poop only, no food scraps. The worms love it AND you get a high-quality fertilizer you can use on all plants.
Any effort to enhance the social standing of dog owners has to be good.
All dog owners are responsible for the actions of their dogs this includes the biting end and the pooping end. I own a dog care (Home Boarding) business and engage a specialist “poop” man to dispose of any waste in my garden. We also carry poop bags when out on walks. If we want our animals and ourselves to be accepted and loved by the community that we live in we have to scoop the poop.
