(Ottawa Dog of the Week for February 16th/09)

“Maddoxx is a male black chow chow. He is about 4 months right now and is already 30 lbs. Like all chows, he has a black tongue and a great attitude. Being a puppy he always finding new adventures and loves walking around Rockland meeting all the neighbours and friends. Maddoxx is full of purple kisses and can be found most often watching his tail wag the dog.” – Maddoxx’s Dad, Jon

NOw that IS ONE CUTE DOG. Looks like a little bear. Can I take him home?!?!?!?!?
Im looking for a reputable Chow breeders in Ottawa. Does anybody have any suggestions? Where did Madoxx come from? Thanks!
Thank you for the compliment Shane!
There are only 3 reputable breeders in Ontario and Quebec that I researched. Depends also if you are looking for Show or Companion. Maddoxx is 100% Companion but is pretty much show quality. Maddoxx comes from La bande a Kiwi: http://www.labandeakiwi.com/index_en.html . Tell them Maddoxx sent ya!
Thanks Lucannus; very much appreciated.
Looking for a companion, but want to ensure healthy parents, environment, etc… particularly with all the mills in the area. I will definitely be checking them out.
Im fairly new to the breed… have you run into any surprises? How much activity does he require? How is he with other animals and kids? Im hoping to dispell any myths about the breed that my girlfriend is nervous about…in my mind, it’s nothing that can’t be taken care of with good training and proper socialization. Thanks again!
Everyday is a new surprise with Maddoxx.. Yesterday we found out how much he likes to eat dirt. Oh joy. Activity: A good walk each day and Maddoxx is very content. The chow myths are just that myths, but they are based on the fact that the Chow chow is a very independent and dominant breed. This is not a breed that you can allow just to do what he wants. You must be prepared to train him and socialize him. Our niece at Christmas walked right up to him, grabbed him by the lips and buried her head in his mane (she is 2 years old). Other than look at me, maddoxx took this activity without reacting, when she went to climb on his back to ride him he hip checked her so she fell on her bottom and he walked away. We all fell over laughing. If you want LOTS more info feel free to email me. Lucannus @ Gmail.com
It’s great to hear that Maddoxx gets along with children, although I have none of my own, this was a concern of mine.
I’ve been in touch with La bande a Kiwi and I went to visit their kennel last week; they were very kind and of course remembered Maddoxx,I think he has become their internet posterpuppy.
I am happy to say I will have a Chow-Chow of my own at the end of April! Ill drop you a line to get some training and chow puppy tips, if it isn’t too much trouble. Thanks a million for playing 20 question with me.
Cheers
my husband and I have owned a Chow Chow (Bear) for 12 years and have just recently had to put him down(wow that hurts to write) I came across labandeakiwi.com and have made an appointement to meet with them Sunday June 14th we cannot see ourselves without a bear in our midst. We hope to get a rust colored and maybe in the Spring get a black female (not to breed)
I love the pictures and appreciate the comments and can’t wait to meet maddox’s relatives hopefully they are as cute as him.
I have a red chow chow – in Hammond. Are there any good dog parks in the east end where I can take him?
I live in the east end of Ottawa and I am looking for a great kennel that has experience in handling the temperament of a dominate chow.
I am trying to get my son a chow chow puppy and I was just wondering where I would find a chow chow puppies in Ontario? preferably not so exspensive as he would be a companion not a show/breeding dog
it is such a delight to read these positive comments about Chows. Chows have been a part of my life since the day I was born and I have yet to know one that lives up to the fairy tales I keep hearing; yes they are stubborn and opinionated, but consider the purposes for which they were bred – herding, carting, sledding, guarding, even used as war dogs by the Tuvans and Mongolians. If the lead dog of the sled team was a passive submissive dog, team and driver would drown in an open lead in the ice. It was vital that the sled Chow think independently. Chows were sent out to hunt independently – again, he had to be able to think independently. When set to guard the flocks, he needed to think for himself. Thinking for himself soon became a habit. Training a Chow is easy, as long as one does not try to use the forceful styles of training. Chows love to play games, and they learn very quickly if the training is fun, with rewards. (They are not always food motivated though. You have to find your Chow’s motivator)
We have just lost our magnificent blue boy to cancer. Our ten-month-old little girl is still looking for him. He was there when she came home from hospital, her guardian and protector, and later her playmate as she learned to sit up and to stand. When she started touring around the house, he was never more than a step away from her. Then one morning, he was not there when she wakened. He had died in his sleep… ever the considerate Chow. It has been a month, and still she looks for him, calling him to share her cookies and treats.
Good with children? One had to see that 95-pound Chow as he oh-so gently took the proffered treat from her little hand.
While our other Chow is still here, somehow the bond is not there between them. It is building, but slowly.
In ten days we shall be bringing home a new puppy – in hopes that he will start to mend the hole in our lives -
He will be a totally different person to our lost love, but maybe he too will want to do agility ? Time alone will tell…
I only know that there is a lot of love waiting for him
