Ottawa Dog Blog had the chance to interview local business owner, Cheryl and Yan, who owns Country Living Dog Resort, a cage free environment for dogs.
Name: Country Living Dog Resort (Cage Free)
Location: St. Albert, ON
Website: dogresort.ca
What kind of dog business do you do?
I have a Cage Free Dog Resort in my home. I really try to create a stress free environment for the dogs and make sure they get a lot of love and lots of exercise!!

How did you get into doing dog-related business?
I’ve always enjoyed the company of dogs. We’ve always had dogs at our place growing up. My fiancée and I discussed starting a pet business shortly after meeting each other. We either decided on a pet store or Boarding Kennel. My fiancée wanted also to become a Professional Dog Trainer in addition to having a pet business. He took a 16 week course, and is now a certified trainer and behavior consultant (bad dog behavior). We decided it was time to either start from scratch or buy an existing business.
We discovered an ad for Country Living Dog Resort in our local community newspaper stating that it was for sale. After a couple of showings, we were convinced. We sold our house and took over in June 2009.

What inspires you and how do you keep motivated when things get tough at the resort?
Sometimes things can get out of hand, but it’s all worth it. We have some busy times and slower times. It’s a challenge at feeding time to separate all the dogs, especially if everyone wants to eat at the same time! I also get to spend some time with my two year old son Alex, which also keeps me motivated.
What advice would you give to a doggy entrepreneur just starting out?
Do your research! Don’t give up when times are hard and never let ANYONE tell you that you CAN’T do it!!! Be patient, and work hard and it will all pay off.

What do you do for fun (besides playing with the dogs at the resort)?
Like I mentioned before, I’m also taking care of my son full-time. I enjoy playing games and watching Monster Trucks on the TV with him. I enjoy cooking, and oil painting.
Do you have a dog(s)? if yes, what kind, please brag about your pooch(es) here.
We have a male Golden Retriever named “Rocky”. We use him as our greeter when we meet new clients and give them a tour of our facility. Rocky makes sure that his potential new friend will get along with everybody!

Kyla offers a top notch Dog Resort. I have been sending my dog Rhea (rottie) to her for years and Rhea always comes back happy, healthy and well fed.
Country Living Dog Resort is the best in the area and I definately recommend it.
Country Living Dog Resort is the only place that we would send out 2 pooches (a large golden and a small lab). They are affordable, clean, have the facilities to accommodate your dogs big or small and always have a great dog lover present for supervision!
After having Country Living Dog Resort take care of our dogs, they come back to us happy, exercised and entertained! We believe that Kyla may take better care of our dogs than we do!!
We know our dogs look forward to us leaving on vacation again.
We just recently left our Lab for 4 nights at Country Living Dog Resort. I couldn’t have asked for a better place for Jack. We were confident that he was in excellent, professional hands and he came home an even happier and more well behaved dog than when we left! We are looking forward to our next vacation!
