Today we have a guest post from Anna, owner of Bargainmoose.ca, a site for Canadian coupon codes, discounts and shopping deals. Anna wants to share some money-saving tips about how to save on purchasing your pet supplies.

Saving on Pet Supplies

Pets can be expensive! Food, treats, and toys all cost money. But here are some methods which you can use to save a little on the pet supplies.

Tear-pad coupons

In-store at the supermarket and grocery stores, you may find books of coupons from which you can tear off a few to keep. Keep a close eye out when you are in the pet supply section of the supermarket. These coupons may be hanging on a hook, or sitting on top of the products.

The tear-pad coupons usually give you a dollar discount amount when buying certain brands.

But remember, don’t grab the whole coupon book. Only take what you think you will need and leave the rest for other savvy shoppers.

Subscribe and follow
If you want to watch out for discounts and special offers for all your favourite brands, I recommend a few things.

1. Subscribe to email newsletters and clubs – go to the website of your favourite brands and sign up to their email newsletters or join their clubs. They may send you coupons right away, or you might get monthly deals to your email. For example, you can join the club at Purina.ca.2. Find the company on social media – find both the twitter page and the facebook pages of your preferred pet food brands. Follow or like them on there, and watch out for mentions on their status updates about discounts and deals. For example, follow Cesar Canada on Facebook.

Optimum feeding amounts
This might sound obvious but sometimes you aren’t aware of something until it is pointed out to you – find out what is the optimum amount of food to give your particular pet. Just do a google search and find a reputable source that tells you what you need to know. For example, I googled for “how much to feed a Labrador.” I learned that Labradors often have to eat less than other dogs as they can have slow metabolisms. The amount of food should depend on how much exercise they get, and the amount of calories in the food (answers.com). They say, ” Depending on your brand of dog food, your Lab might get only 1.5 to 2 cups of food a day + treats during the day.”

If you’re over-feeding your pet, it’s not good for them, and you’re spending more money than you really have to. Take the feeding guidelines into account when feeding your pet.
