A reader informed me today that there had been a fire at the Navan Animal Rescue Corporation (NARC) facilities. I quickly contacted them and sadly, it is true.
From NARC founder, Michelle:
Yes, we lost everything in the fire. You can see my blog, it gives pretty much the details.
[The Fire] happened Jan 1st, we need leashes, collars, money to buy back all of our medications for the dogs (dewormers, advantage, etc…) which will cost at least $1,000 or more – I asked them to price it for me so we will see on Friday what the bill is. We are working on getting the mobile home up and running and we need help in installing flooring, drywall, painting, etc… We may need foster homes for new dogs coming in this weekend. We are OK with food as it was in the trailer so didn’t burn with my house but everything else did – treats, plastic crates, towels for doggy baths, face cloths, doggy shampoo, laundry detergent, etc…
This is such a sad story. Some dogs did die in the fire and with all of their resources gone, they are in desperate need of money and the items Michelle listed above. This was also Michelle’s home and she has lost everything too. If you can help in any way possible, please contact NARC by calling 613-834-7005 or email them.

All socials are held at the Kanata Centrum location from 7PM to 8PM. To register with our dog social clubs, please email Stella your dog’s name & breed along with your name & email address at kanata@barkandfitz.com

(Ottawa Dog of the Week for January 5th/09)

“My name is Raleigh and I’m a nine week old Labrador Retriever German Shepherd mix. Even though I’m only 10 pounds now, I know I’m going to grow to be very big. I get lots of attention whenever I go on walks; everybody seems to love my soft coat and different colours. I love going to the park and playing hockey in the snow with Dad. He always helps me score a hat trick! After a long game, I love relaxing on Mom’s feet in the kitchen. I know that I probably shouldn’t pee in the house, but I can’t help it! I’m so little still, I just can’t hold it! Even when I do, Mom and Dad still love me; they always play games with me and want to spend lots of time with me.
I have to go – my tail keeps calling my name and it’s time that I chased it again! I just hope that I don’t do another somersault trying to catch it! ” – Raleigh (with help from Mom and Dad, Amanda and JF)

CLAUDIA HAS BEEN FOUND!!
From Claudia’s mom, Debbie: “We have found Claudia!!! We now have her home. She has hurt her right eye and has minor scrapes on her paws, but she is okay. She is sleeping and getting rehydrated. We are absolutely grateful for all the help we’ve been given. We just moved to Ottawa last year and the support we’ve had in searching for Claudia has been amazing. Three young women saw her in the road and chased her to another woman’s house. We have cried so much this weekend, but we are so happy that it has ended with tears of joy. The vet told us we were lucky. After two days in the cold, Claudia is back in her warm bed. Thank you again for everything.”

(Ottawa Dog of the Week for December 29th/08)

“Mika and Max were born on March 23/08 and are a pug-poodle mix (not to sure on what the trend name would be for their mix). It has been a bit of a challenge with the two of them, some people told me I was crazy. When they play, they sound like gremlins and it can get very interesting! Just like siblings, they fight over everything – who gets the toy, or who gets the lap. When one gets attention, the other looks at you like it’s the end of the world. Max is the true momma’s boy, if he can see me but can’t get to me he will cry until he gets what he wants. Mika, on the other hand, is independent will come on her terms – she is the princess. They are a handful but have brought so much joy into my life and the people around me. I had them with me at work until they were 5 months old, they saw different people every day. They had a fan club! Ladies would come see them at least once a week on their lunch break. I still have people asking where they are. Funny but amazing!
I hope this is good for you. If you cant use the both of them then you can use what ever you need for info on Max.” – Mika and Max’s Mom, Dana
