(Ottawa Dog of the Week for May 3rd/10)

“This is Miss Colby, our furry love child. Colby is the perfect mix between lap dog/sport dog, she loves nothing more than to wiggle her way into bed and hog all the space/blankets. When she’s not napping, she’s chasing a ball. Her best friends consist of a rat named Finnegan and a crusty old Cairn Terrier named Angus McGruff. A while back we had a wonderful guest post about the DogBook for Facebook program. Now there is one for iPhone and iPod Touch. What really excites me is the Lost Dog option. This could be such a great asset for someone who has lost their dog or found someone else’s dog.

I have an iPhone and have tried this app out on both it and the iPod Touch and it works beautifully. The best part is it actually recognizes Ottawa as a location so it does suggest parks like Bruce Pit and Conroy Pit. You can join the parks if you frequent them as well as add photos – I just added some now for Bruce Pit!

Another great thing is the app is free! You can download the application through the iTunes App store or right from your iPhone or iPod Touch.

(Ottawa Dog of the Week for May 11th/09)

“As of May 11th Yukon will be 15 weeks old and growing like a weed. He is a mixed breed of Chocolate Lab and Siberian Husky. We bought him when he was just 6 weeks old and have enjoyed him thoroughly. Yukon has made many friends at the various dog parks around Ottawa, and shares a special bond with his trainer’s dog Zeus. Yukon is enjoying being a puppy, but it hasn’t been all play. Rachel Armstrong, of ‘RASCALS’ Dog Training, has been training him since he was 8 weeks old and it has certainly paid off. He can sit, down, shake a paw, walk beside us on leash, and is currently trying to master rolling over. Here’s what ‘Rachel Teacher’ had to say about Yukon…

“As a dog trainer new to the business and fresh out of training school, I was unsure what to expect from a dog as young as Yukon. We started training when Yukon was only 8 weeks old…just recently housebroken! But this little puppy surprised everyone, including myself. After only a few lessons, Yukon had mastered his sit and down commands with both voice and hand signals, a ‘drop it’ command, and even some recall commands. Now when you pass Yukon on the street at just 11 weeks of age, you may notice that he is a model on-leash walker, and if you ask nicely, you can shake paws with the smartest puppy in Ottawa!”

Our dogs are family members, and we always want them to be as happy and social as we are. Even though our local dog parks can be a great way to meet other pups and their owners, it can be difficult to keep track of which ones our dogs prefer to frolic with, and to synchronize times when other dogs will be in the parks they frequent (especially in these cold winter months!)

People have Facebook to keep track of upcoming events, post pictures of each other and friends, groups for common interests, all designed to help friends keep in touch with each others lives… Well, enter Dogbook. An application inside Facebook, it allows our furry companions to have a page of their very own, to add pictures, update statuses, and to make human and canine friends.. the list of options is almost as comprehensive as the actual Facebook itself! You can even tag pictures with your dog/dog friends!
Adding parks to your dog’s page is the most invaluable feature, as far as this writer/dog owner is concerned. It allows owners to post park pictures, make comments, and find new doggie friends who frequent the same parks as your own dog does! Also makes a great tool for alerting other owners what times you are there, which ensures that every time you take your pup out, there’s less of a chance of arriving at an empty park!
