(Ottawa Dog of the Week for January 25th/10)

“I rescued Bubbles, a 3 1/2 year old female spayed beautiful Black Newfoundland on July 27, 2009. She came to me with sway-back, no muscle in either legs or shoulders, thread-bare ligaments in both knees, an impact irritation at the 6th and 7th disks of the lumbar spine, a kink from the same hit in her tail spine, and an extremely supplient demeanour. She weighed 131 lbs.
Since then, after taking her to be fully examined by Sandy Benoit (Canine Touch and Tell), and finding out the exact damage done to her, its extent of damage, and the locations involved, I was able to design a specific regimen of low-impact exercise coupled with a specially-formulated diet in order to get her better. Her system had totally gone into remission due to the diet of garbage fed to her over 2 1/2 years, during which time her ailments were never even investigated, let alone dealt with for the purposes of healing her. The impact hit caused her numbness in the rear prior to being able to get sufficient feeling in order to stand up on her hind legs. This “drag” was 2 1/2 minutes when I originally got her, and is now down to 20 seconds. Her sway-back is gone due to muscle growing in both her shoulders and both of her legs. The knee ligaments will still take time.
I have had her on Glucosamine with Condroitin and MSM for bones and cartilage, and she is being fed beef steak (3 oz. chopped) mixed in with her dog chow each and every night. This has the Vitamin B Complex required to resurrect non-responsive nerves – naturally – through normal diet instead of drugs. Between daily exercise, healthy diet, tons of love and affection, she has succeeded in losing 8 lbs of garbage weight by the end of August, which is now being replaced by healthy bone and muscle weight as her system is now fully out of remission and is presently maturing to its pinnacle for her age and size. Her bone structure, also having been in “park”, has now succeeded in producing not only her properly pronounced Newfoundland skull with the pronounced brow, but it has caused her to mature to yet another foot longer. She is taking on the conformation of her mother, with her mum’s kind and gentle face too. Bubbz is genuinely a credit to her noble breed, and I appear to be re-building her in a normal and healthy manner. Her parents are both Canadian Newfoundland champions. Mother is Starry Starry Night (Landseer – Black and White Newfoundland) and her father is Cabot (black Newfoundland). She was originally bred at BearDog Kennels in Trenton Ontario, by Pat and Mark LeClair. When the injury occurred, she could not be bred, so she was adopted by a couple that promised her the best and delivered the worst. Their neglect has consequently turned out to be my blessing, and with the kind and professional assistance of my good friend, Sandy Benoit, and her incredibly accurate diagnosis, I have been able to bring Bubbz up to where she should be: happy, healthy and strong.
These shots were just taken after her visit to the groomer (Shana) at Carling Animal Hospital on January 13, 2010. She did a spectacular job on my precious Newfoundland girl and I just wanted to share the marvelous results with all of you.
Happy New Year to all of you and to all of your lovely dogs as well.” – Bubbles’ Mom, Val
