I wanted to take a moment to speak about how amazed I am at how the Ottawa Dog Blog Twitter Feed has grown and how it’s helped so many dogs.
When I first heard of Twitter, I’ll be honest, I thought it was a really silly idea and would never catch on. Why write something in less than 140 characters?? Who would want to read it?
For those of you unfamiliar with Twitter, it is sort of like a condensed Facebook, with just status updates.
From Wikipedia.com:
“Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service, owned and operated by Twitter Inc., that enables its users to send and read other user’s messages called tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author’s profile page. Tweets are publicly visible by default, however senders can restrict message delivery to their friends list. Users may subscribe to other author tweets—this is known as following and subscribers are known as followers.”
I signed up for a Twitter account for the Ottawa Dog Blog to use as a sort of news feed that would stream into the website – basically things that were important, but not necessarily important enough for a full post.
What it has evolved into is something so beyond what I ever though could happen. It now is today, a giant network of dog lovers who have helped so many lost dogs find their way home.
When I post a note about a lost dog, I have followers retweeting (basically forwarding) the message to their followers and so on. It is amazing how quickly we can get the word out.
I want to thank everyone who follows the Ottawa Dog Blog, all 2478 of you (I know! crazy!! thanks so much!!). You have been such a huge part of expanding Ottawa’s dog community and I am so proud to be connected with you online.
