Blame the tardiness of this post on the beautiful Easter weekend!
(Ottawa Dog of the Week for April 5th/10)

“Gibson is our 2 year old Bearded Collie (Beardie). He is very friendly with humans and dogs, very active at the dog park, but is chilled out and mellow at home. His long coat is virtually weather proof – it takes the swimming after of several sticks into the river behind St. Paul’s University to get him fully wet down to the skin. The undercoat keeps him happy to be outside in the cold weather and coolish in the warm weather, but, like his owners, he doesn’t care for Ottawa’s summer or winter extremes. That coat requires plenty of brushing and combing and visits every 2-3 months to Brenda at Brenda’s Country Clips. Gibs’ coat started out jet black as a pup, lightened right up to a very cool silver grey at about 1.5 years and is now darkening to his adult dark grey at the tail and shoulders. It looks like waves in the wind or as he runs… then looks like waves full of flotsom and jetsom after he wrestles and rolls with the other dogs. His favourite parks are Conroy Pit for the dogs and St. Paul’s for the swims. Gibson is, quite simply, the best dog ever.” – Gibson’s Mom, Jen

In the fall, Dogs at Camp, which offers daycare and overnight care for dogs, opened in Stitsville just outside of Ottawa. Paddington, Corduroy, Thomas and I had the pleasure of attending and everyone had a great time. Their facility is large and has lots of room for dogs to play and run away their energy.
One amazing thing that Dogs at Camp is doing to help the Ottawa dog community is they are fostering dogs for BARK Rescue. What an amazing concept!! The foster dogs get to run and play and have a great time before finding their forever homes. I commend Dogs at Camp for doing this – you are making a huge difference in the lives of dogs and that’s so great!
Soon after they opened, Dogs at Camp launched a blog and I think it’s so much fun! Check it out here.

(Ottawa Dog of the Week for September 7th/09)

“I have a Chinese Crested Powder-Puff named Daphne that I would like to submit for the dog of the week. I got Daphne from a woman who had 4 other small dogs that would constantly growl at my Powder-Puff probably because she was the newest to the pack. Daphne is just over a year old. The lady felt too bad for Daphne that she sought to give her away. I put an add in Kijiji stating that I wanted a small free dog (free because there are so many unwanted dogs and I refused to buy a 500$ puppy with the chance it could come from a puppy mill). The lady who lives in New York state replied to my add concerning Daphne whom she called Dolly at the time. I didn’t like the name Dolly do I found a name with a ‘D’ at the beginning of the name and ‘E’ sound at the ending of the name. When I first got her she looked and acted like a neglected dog, always shivering and would not come near anyone. She has never been on a leash and when put outside it was always in a cage.
I’ve had her for 3 months now and she has made tremendous progress. I also have 2 border collie/black lab mix dogs and they love her. I live in the country and she has lots of room to run and I have to say…Daphne LOVES to run. When watching her run side by side with the other dogs, you can feel the joy come off her. It is truly miraculous the transformation of this extremely timid dog into a loving, loyal, friend who feels comfortable in her environment and her skin. I love my doggy!!!!!” – Dahpne’s Mom, Marie-Catherine

“My name is Raleigh and I’m a nine week old Labrador Retriever German Shepherd mix. Even though I’m only 10 pounds now, I know I’m going to grow to be very big. I get lots of attention whenever I go on walks; everybody seems to love my soft coat and different colours. I love going to the park and playing hockey in the snow with Dad. He always helps me score a hat trick! After a long game, I love relaxing on Mom’s feet in the kitchen. I know that I probably shouldn’t pee in the house, but I can’t help it! I’m so little still, I just can’t hold it! Even when I do, Mom and Dad still love me; they always play games with me and want to spend lots of time with me.
I have to go – my tail keeps calling my name and it’s time that I chased it again! I just hope that I don’t do another somersault trying to catch it! ” – Raleigh (with help from Mom and Dad, Amanda and JF)

“Zeke is a 15 month old boxer who believes at 62 pounds that he is indeed a lap dog. He loves playing with his squeaky toys, chewing on a bully stick and going for car rides. Quite often people who see him are wary believing he is a mean or vicious dog due to his square athletic stance and studded collar and I can’t help but shake my head that people wont even give him a chance. Zeke plays best with smaller dogs as he’ll egg them on to chase him. Zeke’s favorite place in the city is running off leash at Bruce Pit where he an sprint through the tall grass and wrestle with other dogs.” – Zeke’s dad, Brad
