(Ottawa Dog of the Week for May 18th/09)

“Squiggy is an 11 and a half year old pitbull mix, whom I adopted from the Ottawa Humane Society when he was 6 months old. I was working there at the time, and he came in as a stray from Vanier Bylaw, with Parvovirus. Squiggy was never claimed by an owner, but I fell in love with him and we treated his parvo. He is the BEST dog I have ever owned, and we have been fighting Ontario’s Breed Ban from Day 1.
There isn’t a mean bone in his body, and he’s lived with 3 cats, and numerous dogs (roommates dogs, my (our) cats!) over the past years. Although an old guy, Squiggy is still trekking along in life. Having been healthy for most of his life (after the parvo), Squiggy underwent major back surgery for a herniated disk in March 2009 and he is doing awesome! I am attaching lots of pictures as I have many from over the years, and I’ll add a few of him post surgery last week” – Squiggy’s Mom, Donna

Oh, Squiggy is so cute! What a sweet pup! I hope that he continues to have a good recovery. I really enjoyed your pictures. We have a Bull Terrier mix too and he is the most lovable, affectionate and goofy boy I have ever met. He just loves everyone! Our little Boston Terrier likes to play with him and he is quite gentle with her. It’s nice that Cesar Millan from The Dog Whisperer is helping to clear up the misconceptions about this breed with Daddy – his Pitbull – by having Daddy show the unbalanced dogs the way a good dog behaves. Any dog breed has the potential to be unbalanced if it is not properly socialized and trained. It’s up to the humans to be dedicated and to take the time to ensure that their pet is a good canine citizen.
I love this ‘young at heart’ fella.
I wish the Owner could have sent in a few more pictures though.
I think you`re a very much loved pooch.
Have many, many more good years Squiggy.
I enjoyed our visit.
What a great looking dog.
Very sad that the Ontario Gov`t has misled people about these dogs and the situation in Ontario.
Hopefully the Supreme Court of Canada will see through the stuff`n nonsense.
If not, maybe enough people will do their own Research, learn the truth and demand that Legislators repeal the law.
If anyone is interested in what the OVMA had to say prior to the passing of the Ontario Ban,you can read it here.

It all makes for pretty interesting reading but this is the most interesting part
[quote..]An argument is sometimes made that, while all dogs bite, only a few breeds cause serious injury when they attack. Again, this hypothesis does not withstand scrutiny. A study by the Canadian hospitals injury reporting and prevention program examined the dog breeds involved in attacks that were serious enough that the victim sought medical attention at one of eight reporting hospitals. The study revealed that 50 different types of purebreds and 33 types of crossbreeds had been involved in the attacks, the most common breeds being German shepherds, cocker spaniels, Rottweilers and golden retrievers.
What about the most serious of attacks, those resulting in the death of a person attacked? Since 1983, there have been 23 reported human fatalities in Canada due to dog attacks. A total of 55 dogs were involved in these attacks, and only one of these dogs, an American Staffordshire terrier, would be banned under the proposed legislation….[/quote]
Here`s the Bite Study that the OVMA cites and the Canadian Fatalities

Good luck with your fight Squiggy.
I can see that you`re already a winner.
You`re making the Ontario Gov`t look pretty foolish.
Almost as foolish as this fella makes them look.
Hang in there.

Beautiful dog.
Hope he has continued to recover from his surgery.
Read the info provided by Pete.
Hmm….
Looks like some Gov`t folks in Ontario may have fibbed.
Say it ain`t so….if you can`t trust the Gov`t to tell you the truth….who can you trust?
The Media?
Apparently not.
Upon perusing the site linked by Pete,I came upon a whole section on Dog Bites and the Media

If you`re not careful the word may get out.
