It is with great sadness that I announce that Duke, Ottawa’s most famous Great Dane, has passed. Duke was laid to rest last Thursday July 23rd at 3:30pm after a battle with bone cancer. Duke was a staple to the Ottawa and Kanata Bark and Fitz stores. He helped to raise thousands of dollars for charity and brought smiles to many people’s faces over the years.
Although he weighed in at a whopping 180lbs, Duke was the best behaved and gentlest dog I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, and working with. He appeared in many fundraising campaigns for “Photos with Duke” or “Shake a Paw for $1″ and always did so happily and lovingly.
Corduroy, at one point in her life, decided that all big dogs were bad – she’d bark non-stop and let them know that she did not like them, except for one, Duke. She loved Duke and never barked at him. He even let her climb all over him, even though he wasn’t too fond of puppies. That was the kind of dog he was, patient and accepting – people would come to the store just to see him!
Duke brought true meaning to the phrase “gentle giant” and will be missing by many, dogs and humans alike. He is remembered by his humans, Amanda and Matt as well as his doggy siblings, Bosco and Angel and by the entire Bark & Fitz Ottawa and Kanata staff, past and present.

My sympathies. We recently lost Samuel as well so I know how difficult this time is.
I’ve sent a picture I have of myself, Samuel and Duke together from last year to the Ottawa Dog Blog group on Flickr so that it will show up below.
Duke was an amazing dog–the happiest ever! He always made me smile. I will treasure the time I got to spend with him and remember the ride he took in my mini van (he could hardly fit but managed to look comfortable). We’ll miss you Duke–you were the best!

So happy I got to meet and work with you Duke. Lola & Kasper will miss you too. RIP ”Gentle, Giant” DUKE.
I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of poor Duke. While I was never fortunate to meet this lovely dog, I had always wanted to and always heard about him through this blog and other local Ottawa news and media. He sounded like an incredible sweet and loving pooch.
My sympathies to Duke’s human friends for their loss.
RIP Duke!
OMGoodness I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Duke. I met Duke on several occasions in the store and at Dane Night and he was always a gentleman. RIP Dear Duke.

I never got the chance to meet Duke, but seeing pictures of him always made me smile. I hoped to get the chance to meet him one day.
My sympathies for your big loss,
Chantal
Omg! Goodbye Duke! He was such a sweet heart! It was so cute at the last Stella Social we went to – he so wanted to play with some of the doxies, but wasn’t sure how
I’m going to miss him. **hugs**
Dear Amanda: My heart aches for you. My trips to Bark & Fitz were never complete without a visit with Duke. What a delight to spend a few moments with your “gentle giant”. He was such a beautiful boy.
